Comics I Enjoy

XKCD

A pretty nerdy comic about math, science, and the internet. As a computer science major I find this comic particularly amusing as many of the comics refer to concepts in math, logic, or computer science. The humour tends to be hit-and-miss.

Some of them that I find particularly amusing:

Centrifugal Force
Fetishes (this probably isn't funny to about 99.9% of the population, but I find it hilarious)
Beliefs (okay, so this isn't the funniest XKCD, but I had to post this one for its content)

Cectic

A skeptic comic. Possibly my favourite webcomic of all. Common themes are religious skepticism (or lack thereof), conspiracy theorists, and "alternative medicine". Unfortunately it isn't updated frequently anymore, but it is still active. It's pretty consistently hilarious.

Ones I find particularly amusing:

ScientLOLogy
sry guyz my brain d/ced
Conclusive Proof

We The Robots

A comic about robots! Common themes are skepticism and office life.

The True Meaning of Christmas
An Atheist, Damned to Hell
Introduction, Chapter 002

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

I don't even know how to describe this comic. Instead let me just give a sample of ones I find funny (they don't have names so I had to make them up!):

A Religious Look at the Origins of the Universe
The Most Elegant Language Ever Created (computer programming joke, but I think anyone can appreciate it)
Finished Building the Universe

Pet Peeve

This is going to make it very obvious that I am very nerdy, and perhaps show that I spent too much time on Facebook and MSN, but I can't take it anymore.

The equality sign (=) is not a synonym of "is".

We've all seen them before:
"Mexico = awesome"
"Halo 3 = awesome"
"Spiderman 3 = lose"
"Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Dickwad"

I don't understand what would cause someone to misuse mathematical notation like this. It's almost as if they are trying to seem clever by using math symbols, but have no idea what the symbols actually mean.

In case you don't see the problem here, equality is a symmetric relation – meaning that if x equals y, y equals x.

Mexico being awesome does not imply that awesome is Mexico. Think about it. If "Mexico = awesome" and "Halo 3 = awesome" then "Mexico = Halo 3".

The use of arithmetic is even worse. With a little bit of rearranging:
"Audience = Total Dickward – Normal Person – Anonymity"
What the fuck does that even mean?

Please. People already have a hard enough time understanding basic mathematics. Don't exacerbate the problem by abusing mathematical symbols.
